Tour of the Molignťe and the Lesse Valleys in the Belgian Ardennes, Monday 9th August 1999
A full day exploring the Molignťe and Lesse valleys, in the Belgian Ardennes region, approximately 130km north of Rethel, for an all-in price of £16.
Activites include: a short coach tour of the area, a 'rail-bike' journey through the Molignťe valley, a picnic lunch at a local inn, and a descent of the River Lesse by Canoe.
9.30am. Meet at 'Kayaks Ansiaux', 15 Rue du Velodrome, 5500 Dinant, Anseremme. A coach will be waiting in the car park in front of the Railway Station, between the Hotel Aquatel and Cafeteria Terrasse. A map of the meeting point will be included on your tickets.
9.55am. Depart to FalaŽn.
10.30am. Arrive at the old Railway Station at FalaŽn.
11.00am. Travel along the old railway line in 4-person 'rail-bikes' at your own speed, through the picturesque Molignťe valley linking FalaŽn with the Maredsous Abbey (you can decide for yourselves who does the pedalling, and who sits back to enjoy the ride!).
Midday. Picnic lunch at a local inn near the Maredsous Abbey. Enjoy the ham of the Ardennes, the cheese of the Maredsous and the trappiste beer 'Crochon' brewed by the monks! Return to FalaŽn by the same route.
1.00pm. Arrive back at FalaŽn. Rejoin coach for journey to Gendron, passing through the Walloon countryside with its picturesque villages and panoramas.
2.00pm. Arrive at Gendron for the return to Anseremme by two-seater canoe along the River Lesse. This is a 12km descent of the River Lesse, through national park scenery including medieval castles, prehistoric caverns, caves and feudal ruins. Enjoy yourselves at the waterfalls at Walzin and Pont-a-Lesse! Life jackets for the canoe trip are available for hire (100FB), as are watertight containers for personal belongings (60FB). Note that 40BF = 6.60FF = 1Euro.
At 'Kayaks Ansiaux' at Anseremme, there is a cafť with a terrace along the river bank, together with showers and toilet facilities.
The all-in price of £16 (23Euro or 150FF) per person includes the coach fare, the picnic, the rail-bikes and the kayaks (life jackets, watertight containers for the canoes are extra).
